Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. You don’t mind, do you? Every year across the country we gather with our families-be it chosen or blood related-and share a big meal and hopefully laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Then, a good deal of us go yell at someone and prove that the book The Hunger Games was not too far off base as we snatch a toy out of someone’s hand and watch videos of stampedes in stores that crush and injure people. On top of all of that, we’re all living on land that was forcibly taken from the indigenous people, while they get pushed to reservations. But, on Thanksgiving suddenly we remember Native Americans and we’re thankful they helped the settlers. *Looks into the camera like this is The Office.*
The long and short of it is that there is an element of willful ignorance and a turning away of our faces from the reality of what indigenous people face everyday. It doesn’t sit right with me. I’m sure it doesn’t sit right with a good deal of us. Can we try to inject some honor back into the holiday? As you enjoy your side dishes (let’s be real, does anyone enjoy turkey?), consider introducing some new traditions to your celebration that seeks to honor the indigenous people that still live in our country.
